WILD LION RUNS AWAY FROM ZOO!

Last night, between 10pm and midnight, a wild lion escaped from a well-known zoo.

The zookeepers for the lion enclosure at Longleat Safari Park, on the outskirts of Winchester, are shocked and petrified that Simba the dominant male has escaped.

They don’t know how he ran away but at the moment experts are looking for paw prints.

One of the zookeepers, Louise Black, said, “We are all shocked that Simba has gone. We thought that it was impossible to escape from our enclosure. Our fences are four metres high!

“Simba eats all kinds of meats. We give him a variety, but his favourite is beef, so cattle are highly at risk.”

The police have asked people not to walk around Winchester as Simba could be anywhere. We don’t want to risk people getting hurt or killed.

He is a very affectionate lion as he is hand reared, but he does not like strangers. We are searching by using helicopters and a search party is looking on land.

The police will be searching continuously and we will update you with all the latest news. Everyone, please do not panic, but please just don’t walk around Winchester or anywhere near there.

Directed Writing - Science: an article about smallpox, by Toby

“I beat smallpox,” says Edward Jenner.

Edward Jenner has found a cure for smallpox. He did an investigation on a little boy called James. In this investigation, he put cowpox puss on to poor James’s arm. After his recovery, he put smallpox on his arm and, surprisingly, James did not get smallpox, only a scab on his arm.

Mr Jenner said, “I am so glad that I found this very important cure. Now I shall save hundreds of lives. People are being vaccinated with cowpox so that they don’t get smallpox as we speak.”

Response to Literature – Letter to Macbeth, by Frey

My dear loved one,

My dearest wife, I’ve missed you all the time. I’m coming home!

The battle was very sad, but we won! Only forty five killed after some hard fighting. I thought we would lose at first, but as you know, we won.

After the battle, Banquo and I were walking home when we saw these hags, I don’t know, making a potion or something. They were horrible, so wild in their attire. They had beards, but looked like women.

The weird sisters foretold a prophecy. The first witch addressed me normally. The second addressed me as ‘Thane of Cawdor’ and you won’t guess what the third witch called me. She addressed me as the King!

When I got home, the king made me Thane of Cawdor! I’m so happy, maybe I’ll be King, like they said. Should I go back to the hags to get more? It may be one prophecy for one person.

I’ll see you soon,

Your husband, Macbeth

Science: A letter from Edward Jenner, by Seung yeon

Dear Mr Dudley,

I have got a solution to avoid people getting smallpox.

First of all I got a lady who had cowpox, which is a similar disease to smallpox. I took infected pus from her hand and scratched it into the arm of an eight year old boy called James.

He got cowpox but soon fully recovered. I then took pus from someone who had smallpox and scratched it into James’s arm. He got a scab on his arm, but he did not develop smallpox. The vaccine worked.

I will continue to infect local children with cowpox so they avoid catching smallpox.

Yours faithfully

Dr Edward Jenner

Science: A letter from Edward Jenner, by Francesca

Dear Editor,

I recently conducted an experiment which had some very curious results. Having heard that if you’ve had cowpox, then you cannot get smallpox, I decided to find out for myself.

First I took pus from a sore on a cowpox infected milkmaid’s hand. Then I injected this into an eight-year-old’s arm. For a short time he was ill, but he soon got better. After that, I injected him with smallpox pus. He developed a scab, but nothing more. I had succeeded.

I am hoping to change the world with this vaccine. I hope I do.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Jenner

My Manifesto, by Simon

Hello. My name is Simon and I have been at St Winifred’s for six and a half years and I am ten years old. I am going to try and persuade you, today, that you should choose me as your rep.

My first reason that you should vote for me is that I will promise to be a good listener and pay attention in the meetings. This will mean I will not forget things.

My second reason is that I am good with children. For example, I have a baby cousin and I play with him, so I think I am a good role model for younger children.

A further reason is that I promise to be a good problem solver because I can stop people fighting and putting their problems together to make a solution.

The final reason is that I am a good role model to younger children. For example I am helping little children.

So I hope you will vote for me as school council rep.

My Manifesto, by Lucy

Hey, Guys! My name is Lucy. I am ten years old and I have been at St Winifred’s for one and a half years.

I am going to persuade you today with many convincing reasons, that you should vote for me to be your class rep.

I am a creative person because I have a baby cousin and we do face painting and drawing together. I am also a fantastic role model for my baby cousin because when he was younger I looked after him.

I can be a fun and responsible person because I am always laughing with people but I am also responsible for little children and if a teacher asks me to do something I do it.

The final reason why you should vote for me is because I am clean and tidy, so you can read my writing when I take information from the class. Also, I have been school council rep before so VOTE FOR ME! Because you know I am the one.

My Manifesto, by George

Hi! My name is George. I have been at St Winifred’s for seven years. I think this is one of the reasons why I would be an excellent rep for the class. I am ten years old and, by the second term, will be eleven

Today I would like to persuade you that I am the best person for the job as rep for the class.

I am going to listen to your ideas and will put them forward to the Head Boy and Girl and Deputy Head Boy and Girl. The main reason I will be good would be because I would do everything I can to make them think about your idea.

The second reason is that I will listen to your suggestions and, even if I don’t like them, I will talk about them.

A further reason is that I will be on time and bring other children if they are lost or have forgotten about the meeting. I am a very responsible person. That’s why I think I would be the best rep.

I’m sure these reasons have shown you that I am the best rep for the job. I hope have enjoyed my speech. VOTE FOR ME!
