Poetry Competition 2008 Winners

First Prize. The Attic, by Georgia

Up in the attic many say

What’s this?

Where’s that from?

How did that get there?

Bits and bobs from way back when,

Knick-knacks from there and then,

Bric-a-brac and souvenirs collected for who knows why,

Old, ancient, dusty junk kept to hold onto the past,

Memories stored in big, brown boxes, bags, books and photo albums,

Pictures and pictures from, oh, I don’t know when!

Old gas masks and rocking horses, all part of history before now.

The attic reminders of happy, bad or even sad times

But still a magical place.

Second Prize Clocks, by Stephen

Early alarm bell wakes me up!

I hate the tick, tick, ticking.

It’s ticking as noisy as a giant metronome.

I slam my hand on the button

And it falls to the floor with a bang!

Some clock’s bells ring on the hour, or half past,

But my clock’s bell rings every ten minutes!

Clocks are annoying, tick, tock! Ding! Ding!

Third Prize The Moon, by Alice

I’m the shimmering, shining silver queen of the night.

Glowing, glittering, gleaming, gliding across the sky.

I pull the waves up on your shores

Flashing my bright eyes, I give you light in your hours of darkness.

I sing my silent song to the stunning stars of the night.

Then I look across the sky to say hello

To my beaming, blistering mother, the sun.

But, with a crash, night turns to day and I sleep till the stars shine again.

Commended. Foooood, by Joe

Pancakes piled up on a plate,

Pink pasta platter,

Pepperoni and pork pizza,

Cravings for crunchy cod,

Contentment with cool chocolate,

Big and bland veggie-burgers,

Peeled bananas, smelling sweet and alluring,

Grilled hoke, steaming hot,

Mexican chilli, spicy and nice.

My favourite animal, by Ellie

My favourite animal is a dog. Now there are loads of different types of dogs, but my all time favourite is the German Shepherd, or you might call them Alsatians. German Shepherds have different coloured fur. Some of them are black all over or they could be albino and white all over but the dog I am talking about is called Sasha and she has black fur on her back and is gold on the rest of her body. Her ears are brown and are pink inside. German Shepherd’s tails are long and bushy with black, gold, brown or white on. Their paws have pads on the bottom of them, but when they are puppies the pads are all soft and velvety. After a couple of months they start to go hard like a rock. The face of the dog is called a muzzle. The nose is black and the tongue is very long! The male German Shepherds tend to be a lot bigger than the females.

Now, when it comes to behaviour, Sasha is the worst for it. She sometimes can be a cheeky little monkey and takes meat which is on the side of the kitchen table. Very occasionally Sasha can be naughty and dig enormous holes in the garden. Sasha’s well known behaviour is being affectionate and being kind.

Sasha does a lot of things in her time, like playing tug of war (only because she wins all the time) and beating up the hoover. But her favourite thing is playing with her brother, Max, who is a German Shepherd too, and winding him up. Sasha loves going for long walks and being free. Also water is fascinating for her and she likes to do a belly flop into the water. One of the things Sasha does is leave her scent on a tree to tell other dogs she’s been there.

Overall, Sasha is a lovely family pet and when you’re around her it makes you feel safe. So that’s why my favourite animal is a German Shepherd!

Puppy, by Emily

I have chosen to write about a Springer Spaniel puppy. My puppy’s name is Rosie. She is six months old. Springer Spaniels are very bouncy. When I take her for a walk she runs everywhere. She is not easy to control on the lead as she pulls and when we let her off the lead she chases birds and does not come when she is called.

Rosie is white with brown spots and she has floppy ears. One of her ears is totally brown and the other is brown with a white spot which makes her look quite cute. Rosie is a small Springer spaniel but I think she will grow some more as she is only a puppy. She has white legs with brown spots and she has a long tail which is brown and white.

She has loads of energy and can run very fast. When we take her for a walk she never gets tired. Sometimes she is good, but she can be naughty and is always looking for mischief. She likes rolling and jumping in the long grass, especially if it is wet. She loves to get muddy. At home she likes biting all her toys, but they don’t last long as she rips them up. She could play all day and night.

The Palmist, by Tristan

One day a guy named Aniken was walking with his friend Siduos.

“Siduos, are you trying for the football team?” Aniken asked.

“Not really,” Siduos replied. “We don’t get to know who is in the team until just before the match.”

“So?”

“Well, you might keep practising and in the end you don’t get in the team.”

“No,” replied Aniken, though he knew this would drive him crazy. Then, suddenly, he had an idea. “I’ve got to go,” he told Siduos.

“Where?” Siduos replied, but Aniken had already gone.

Aniken entered a battered old shop with the paint peeling off.

“Excuse me. Are you the new palmist around here?”

“Yes, I am,” replied the rather ugly palmist.

“I am here to get my palm read.”

“You want to know if you will be in the football match tomorrow.”

“How did you…”

“Yes, you will be in. Now get out of here.”

He ran out quickly. So I am in the football match, he thought.

Soon he was practising for football. If he hadn’t known, he would not have practised so much. He didn’t go to bed. On the big day the match was tied nil-nil and he was going to score. Then he saw a dragon and he turned into a knight. The dragon hit him, and then everything went black. When he opened his eyes, he was at the goal mouth, on the floor. Everyone was looking at Aniken, shocked. Then he realised he had slept and screamed, “Nooooo!”

Later, Aniken and Siduos went to the fortune teller. When they got there, they found the rather ugly fortune teller.

“You’ve ruined my life!” Aniken yelled.

“You shouldn’t have come to me,” the fortune teller said, smoothly holding up a card.

“Siduos, get her,” Aniken shouted.

“I will.”

“Too late,” she yelled, and showed them her card. It looked like a tornado. “Dust tornado, activate!” the palmist screamed, and a tornado covered her, blowing everything away, including Aniken and Siduos. When they got up, the palmist had disappeared.

“That’s not possible,” Siduos whispered and fainted.

“That palmist ruined my life. Why did she tell my future?”
