Highlights of Spring Term 2007

Thursday 29th March 2007 - the school choir sang School choir singing at the Mayors' Ballat the Mayor of Southampton's Glitz and Glamour Ball. The choir arrived at the Guild Hall nervous but excited at 8:45pm. They assembled in the foyer then filed through the side passages to a dressing room behind the stage to wait for the moment when they marched in to the spotlight. There was lots of talk of nerves but when the moment finally arrived they marched on to sing composed and confident. The two numbers went down very well with the guests. An extra big thank you must go to Mrs Vincent who stepped in as Maria at the last minute. A super performance by everyone. Well done to all the members of the choir.

Pupils wore red accessories for Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day at St Winifred's 16th March. The pupils came to school today with red accessories. There were a wide variety of hats, socks, ties including bow ties, tights and shoes. Some children even came up with inventive ways of creating accessories. Lots of Dads hunted through their wardrobes to provide ties. Two brothers even shared a pair of socks!   A Big THANK YOU to everyone who took part.

Visit from Jan Parkin for a road safety lesson

Years 3 and 4 had a road safety lesson from Jan Parkin, who is an expert on the subject.

Seung yeon: The lady asked us some questions about road safety and showed us some reflective things. It was useful.

Antonia: It was interesting, about how to keep safe on the roads by making people see us more easily when they are driving. The reflective stuff was kind of cool.

Trip to Waitrose 27th and 28th February

Two groups, one per evening, went down to Waitrose in Portswood, at their invitation, to take part in a cookery session. The pupils each made a cheesecake which they took home with a copy of the recipe.

Cory: It was great! I especially liked the mashing up of the biscuits in a bag. Mine tasted very sour, but maybe I had put in too much lemon.

Freddie: It was really messy, but the cheesecake was really refreshing.

Euan: My cheesecake was a bit cheesy, but the biscuit base was great. It was a really good session.

Charlotte : The making process was quite, especially squeezing the lemon. At the end we tasted the lady's cheesecake and it was nice, but at home I thought my own was not as good but my mum loved it and ate most of it. She felt sick afterwards!

Georgia P: Beating up the biscuits was hard. I use a rolling pin at home. I told my mum the base might be lumpy. It was, but it tasted nice.

Alice D: It was fun making it and it tasted good, even though I had put in a little too much lemon in, so it was a bit sour.

Louise: The lorry was cool. It looked small outside, but was big inside; there was another room as well as the kitchen. I didn't like my cheesecake much, but my mum and dad did.

Emily: I liked it when we got to make the cheesecake. I liked the lady's cake, which we tried, but we haven't eaten ours yet.

Frey: It was fun. We got the recipe to take home. Each cheesecake served two, so we all ate some because Cory had his. Mine was best. It tasted better after it had been in the fridge. We had apple juice, too.

Two pupils doing a science experimentLightwave Roadshow

On the afternoon of Thursday 9th February 2007 the Art and Science rooms at school were invaded by Scientists! Dr Cesar Misas and his colleagues from Southampton University came with a variety of boxes and liquids to give everyone from Transition to Form 6 a really exciting afternoon of Science. There were lots of experiments to try and paint to make then use.

The children and staff had an exciting time moving round the four rooms learning abut different aspects of science. It was an invigorating experience. With lots to do and learn.

Pupils dressed as characters from a book or a film

Dress up for Readathon

Princesses & Princes to Special Agents. Fairies as well as Monsters. A great time was had by all and over £100 was raised towards our Readathon collection. A BIG THANK YOU to all who took part.

Science lesson at The Gregg School

The 6th Form went to the Gregg School for a taste of what Science lessons will be like next year.  This is what they said about their visit:

Fiona: I liked the flying bottle best, especially when it squeaked instead of going bang.

Euan: I liked the experiment with the potassium permanganate when it went bang and covered the Perspex shields in gunge. I also liked the frothy one in the test tube.

Onkaar: The best one was outside when the rocket went up, but there were loads of good things.

Laura: I liked the bright light when we lit the strip of magnesium and looked at it through blue glass.

Ben: I liked it when we pumped up the water rocket and it shot up in the air.

Jessica: I liked lighting the metal strip and looking through the blue glass because it could damage your eyes.

Kerr: The first one which was making gun powder like you use for firing cannon balls was best. The liquid splashed everywhere.

Cory: When the rocket went up after we pumped it up, it was quite a surprise. I didn't expect it to go that high.

Reece: Thank you, Mr Hatherall, for an explosive time!

Freddie: I liked it when we were burning different chemicals.

Ella: It was fun and exciting, especially the water rocket, but the other experiments as well.

Sanghoon: I really enjoyed every experiment and I most enjoyed the rocket fuel.

Max: The rocket using oxygen and hydrogen that shot across the room was the best. The second one, which squeaked, was funny. The water rocket was also fun

Rachel: I liked the water rocket – especially as it nearly hit Miss Patchett. Burning the magnesium strip was also great because it was so bright.

Gaby: I enjoyed the bangs and flames and I found out a lot about mixing chemicals. I really enjoyed it.

Jake: I liked the water rocket most and burning magnesium which was so bright we had to look through blue glass.

Jordan : The water rocket was really exciting because it went really high.

January 26th Burns Night Supper

BagpipesOn Friday parents and pupils were invited to a Burns Night

Supper at school.

On arrival everyone was invited to complete an informal quiz onBurns' Night Supper a wide range of topics relating to Scotland.  Mrs Morris, our cook, prepared a tradition meal of Scotch Broth, Haggis 'neaps and tatties, followed by trifle.  The haggis was piped in by Naomi, an ex-pupil.  After the meal we shared poems written by a variety of poets.  It was an excellent and enjoyable evening.

Felt Making 18th and 19th January - during their art lessons, Forms 3, 4, 5 & 6 were introduced to Felt Making by Mrs Carolyn Sinclair. Mrs Sinclair kindly gave upher time to show the pupils items that she has made and instruct them to make felt for themselves. The lessons were enjoyed by all the participants and I am sure the lower school classes will have the same amount of fun in their workshops later in the year. Some of the pupils have commented about their experiences:

Feltmaking 1  Feltmaking 3  Feltmaking 2

Freddie: It was brilliant, really fun. I loved banging it about.

Jake: It was really good. We had to bash it about.

Onkaar: The lady told us to think of the ‘worst person you hate' and keep bashing the material.

Alice B: It was fun. We learnt how to make felt pictures.

Alice D: It was exciting to learn new skills. The lady was nice.

9th January 2007 Choir Sing to Mayor and Mayoress

The Choir visited the Mayor's ParlourThe Choir at the Mayor's Parlour

On Tuesday 9th January, members of the school choir went to the Guildhall, Southampton to sing to the Mayor and Mayoress in his Parlour. Councillor John Slade enjoyed our program which included a variety of songs from last term's performances. He then very kindly showed us around his parlour and offices. The pupils were able to try on his robes and hold various artefacts.

Science Afternoon, Thursday 8th January

The University of Southampton brought a group of researchers into school to show the pupils from Transition up some interesting and unusual things about science.

Transition

Serena: I enjoyed everything, especially the tricks they showed us in the TV room.

James: It was good. The best was making paints by crushing eggs!

Jordan R: I liked everything so much. I thought it was so very good.

Harry: I thought it was fantastic

Form 2

Orla: I enjoyed the painting. I did a painting done with paint made from mixing chalk with egg.

Sherie: It was cool. I liked the science best, all of it.

Sanjiv: The TV room was good, all of it, but especially the bit with mirrors and the pig.

Form 3

Francesca: The science room had a hall of mirrors which made the room look full of people. In one of the laser demonstrations they shone a laser through water at the wall and when they pulled the plug out, the green laser beam went down the plug hole!. Another laser demonstration was when a laser was bounced off mirrors at a star.

Arman: It was quite fun. My favourite bit was when the man put walls in and we had to use mirrors to reflect a laser beam on to a star.

Form 4

Ajay: It was good. I enjoyed the science room best with the mirrors and lasers.

Louise: It was really amazing. My favourite was colour making in Art and using it to paint a picture of a deer.

Form 5

Emma: I liked the art, making a cave painting with crushed egg and chalk. It was really fun.

Alice B: I liked the painting. I crushed chalk with powder and mixed it with gooey egg and pretended to be an Egyptian cave person and painted pictures.

Charlotte : Science was fun, flashing a laser at a star. It was really cool.

Jack: I liked the science room. There were mirrors joined in a triangle with the angles just right so that you could see like into infinity when you looked into them. It was good.

Form 6

Gaby: The magic stuff was really good in the Tv room, but so was the Science room with the mirrors. It was a really nice afternoon and good fun.

Laura: They gave us paper with writing on which we decoded by using mirrors. It was really good. The art room was good too, crushing egg and chalk.

Cory: It was good, everyone enjoyed it. I liked hitting the target with the laser. I won a prize! The codes were good too, getting the angle right in the light to read the message.

Freddie: It was brilliant! I liked the TV room There was a picture of a pharaoh which moved as you moved.

Reece: I liked the holographic pig. It really brightened up my day.
