Sports Highlights of the Autumn Term 2006

Schools’ Biathlon

Sunday 26th November

Years 5 and 6 sent representatives to take part in the running and swimming event.

Lucy: I enjoyed it, but I had trouble with the running. I was in the first heat, so I had to pace myself, but I got it wrong! I did a little better in the swimming, though.

Georgia M: The warm up session was frantic, with bodies everywhere. It was a good experience, because next year we’ll know what to do. In the running I tried my hardest and I felt like I was flying along, but the rest must have been flying faster than me!

Ella: I enjoyed the swimming, but it was really cold and the opposition was good. The running was fun but freezing. 1000 metres is a long way and really tiring!  I came fifth out of about 20.

Rachel: It stopped raining just in time for my race. I came 10th out of 20 in the running, but did not do as well in the swimming. I was nervous waiting for things to happen, but it was really fun.

Jake: I came 1st in my swimming heat, but 7th overall. The running was not as good, though, so it brought me down overall. It was a good experience.

Jessica: I came 7th out of 20 in the running, in the rain. It was fun, but it was a long distance. One of the girls running had come 5th in the British Championships. I came 4th in my swimming heat, so my overall position was quite good. I was pleased with my result, but the running was hard.

Netball under 11 v Woodhill

Monday 27th November

Ella: We won 12-0! It was a really good, quiet game. I wish they were all like that. I was goal attack in the first half and scored four goals. Gaby scored 5.

Fiona: I was goal attack in the second half and scored 3 goals. Our first goal came in the first twenty seconds. Their coach said they needed to be a bit more forceful, but we didn’t mind.

Laura: It was quite easy playing against them. Whenever they threw the ball to centre, where I played for half the match, I was able to get it easily. I would like to play them again.

Rachel: I found it boring, mostly, because I am goal keeper, so I hardly got the ball. They only had one shot at goal and missed. Most of the action was at the other end. I was captain, but all I could do was cheer people from a distance!

Jessica: I was centre for half the match, so I could do a lot. I was passing to Ella and Ellie. My partner was quite good. Mrs Drake changed our positions to give us practice.

Gaby: It was a really good match. They were not very experienced and we have been like that, so we had some fellow feeling for them. It was nice not to be on the receiving end.

Girls Under 9 Netball v Hampshire Collegiate

Thursday 23rd November

The Players of the Match were Hershila and Naomi

Seung yeon: This was my first netball match. The opposition were very tall, mostly Year 4, at least. We had only 3 Year 4 players. They were their A team, with lots of experience, but their coach was nice. I tried my best.

Paige: It was very hard, because they were so much bigger and better, but it was good practice. I enjoyed it.

Antonia: It was quite hard, but they were not good with their feet. We got the ball, but they were so tall they always got it off us. My partner was very nice, though.

Emily: I enjoyed the game, but they were experienced players and this was our first game. It was a good game and next time we will be better.

Naomi: I was marking a girl who was really fast – she always got the ball before me! I enjoyed it, but I will enjoy it more after some more practice.

Hershila: My partner was taller than me, but she was kind and nice.

Under 9 Football v Hampshire Collegiate

Thursday 23rd November

The Man of the Match was Sam

Toby: We didn’t have enough players, so we had to borrow one from the opposition! We were not really ready for the match, but it was fun. Our goalie had a hard time.

Frey: I was in goal. The goal mouth was really muddy – too muddy, so I didn’t want to dive. Some got past me. One ball went it from a hand-ball, but luckily the ref saw it. We tried our best.

George: At one point I had a massive player in front of me, but I took the ball off him, passed to Arman, but someone got in his way.

Sam: This was our first match. I am still working on my technique.

Under 11 Football v Hiltingbury

Wednesday 22nd November

Mr O’Flagherty: It was an excellent, sporting game, played in the spirit of friendship. Sanghoon saved two, excellent shots at goal and Adam was Man of the Match.

Jordan: I headed one which hit the crossbar and skimmed the post with another, but I didn’t score. One time I slipped right in front of the post. I ended up with more mud on me than on the pitch.

Onkaar: I scored two of the goals and just missed a hat-trick. We had loads of chances but their keeper was good. Max’s corner was just right for me, so I headed it in. The other goal was when I took the ball off a defender and shot it between the posts.

Sanghoon: I let in a very silly goal, because it went above my head. I didn’t play my best, but I enjoyed it. I had no goalie gloves or studs, so I slipped around everywhere.

Adam. I scored the equalizer! I ran around one player and took a shot from defense, almost on the halfway line. It went straight through the goalie’s arms! I thought I played a good match.

Under 10 Football v Fryern

Tuesday 7th November

Mr O’Flaherty: It was a good match. Both teams showed good sportsmanship. Our team played well, but the other side got most of the ball. Our man of the match was Sanghoon, who saved a lot of goals.

Sanghoon: I let in several goals, but saved a lot as well. Our team did not get a chance to score.

Frank: It was a good match, even though we lost. I played in midfield, but they got the ball more than we did.

Adam: I was in defence but they came at us thick and fast. They were much bigger than us, some of them looked older, too.

Jordan: Onkaar passed to be, I shot at goal, but some person deflected it! We got a corner, but they cleared it.

Max: I was first to head the ball in this match, but couldn’t score. One of their players was really huge, as big as a twelve year old!

Onkaar: We did not get the ball much, but when I did I shot at goal, even though I was near the half way line. It bounced off the crossbar, the wrong way.

Rachel: I tackled a boy and took the ball off him. He fell down. I couldn’t help laughing.

Under 10 Football Match against Woodhill

Tuesday, 31st October (at The Gregg School)

Score 2:1 to Woodhill

Man of the Match: Sam, who played a good, all round game.

Arman: It was really exciting. I scored my first ever goal in a match.

Stephen: This was my first football match for St Winifred’s. I enjoyed it. I nearly scored but the goalie got in the way.

Bane: It was a very good match. We only lost by one goal. Their goalkeeper stopped me scoring, but it was fun.

Adam: This was only my second ever school match. It was very exciting and made me want to play again. I might have scored but someone tripped me up. The ref needs to get a pair of glasses!

Lucy: I lost my head when I saw the chance to score. I chipped it too hard. Someone hit me in the stomach with a plaster cast. They still beat us, even with invalids!

Georgia: I was a defender. Every time I went to stop them, except once, they got past me. Oh no! It was really annoying.

ISA Swimming Gala

Thursday 19th October, Aldershot

The team accompanied by Mrs Drake left St Winifred’s at 6:30am. They all tried very hard and were a credit to the school.

Mrs Drake: The standard was very high. St Winifred’s team swam their hearts out. They swam brilliantly against stiff opposition. Jake won his race and got a medal.

Jake: I beat my personal best by 2 seconds in the 50m front crawl. I was really pleased with myself.

Sanghoon: It was quite hard because the pool was so big, but I did quite well.

Ella: It was freezing cold, but really fun. The other contestants were really fast, but I was only a metre behind. The lunch was nice.

Jessica: We had to wake up really early to get there. We came third in the relay and I came 4th in the backstroke. It was an Olympic size pool.

Ellie: I was really scared, but I got over it and did alright. I was happy with my performance.

Bane: It was really hard, because they swam so fast. I couldn’t catch them.

Seung Yeon: It was hard because I was competing with older children, but I managed to come sixth in the backstroke.

Under 9’s Football against Woodhill

Thursday 12th October (at the Gregg School)

Toby: ‘It was a good match for me, even though we lost 5-3. I scored three goals, but I was set up by Lucy, who passed to me whilst I was running. I was being tackled by loads of Woodhill players, but I got past them and shot for goal.

Sam: I scored, but at the wrong end! I passed the ball back to the goalie and watched it trickle past him into the goal. Well, if England can do it, so can I.

George: I had problems shooting in the right direction, but I didn’t manage to score at either end, not like some I could mention. I took a really heavy tackle just before the end and finished the game limping.

Seung yeon: I was in goal. It was hard work. There were shoots coming from all over the place. I saved a lot, but let in three from Woodhill, but also - argh! - two from our side. Oh no!

Netball Under 11’s against Hampshire Collegiate

Wednesday 11th October (at the Gregg School)

Gaby: I was captain. Rachel did some really good high passes, even though she pulled a ligament in her finger in training and she stuck with her partner, so I was able to score 4 goals and Ella got one. I was shouting orders and my partner kept giving me dirty looks. It was quite fun but hard: they were taller than us.

Jessica: We won 5-1 because Gaby made up this dance routine to make us work as a team.

Fiona: When I was goal attack, I was no good, but when I went on to the wing I was much better, except I kept wanting to go into goal attack’s area, but I wasn’t allowed.

Georgia: I was wing defence. I kept forgetting my partner, but I did get some balls back. It was a good match.

Under 11’s Football A team against Merdon

Tuesday 10th October (away)

Max: They scored right from the start. At 1-0, Jordan had a shot that hit the post. We thought we had scored. That would have made us level, but we hadn’t. I almost scored from the halfway line, but the goalie saved it.

Onkaar: I was a forward, but I never managed to get one in. Their goalie was too good.

Sanghoon: I was made ‘man of the match’, even though we lost 3-0. I saved a lot of goals, some at full stretch. One ball hit my face really hard, but I stopped the goal.

Rachel: I played in defence, but sometimes I was told to push up the field to try to score, but it was no use. They kept getting past so I had to rush back or there would be no defence.
