The Lower School
refers to the Early Years department and the Key
Stage 1 classes of Form 1 and Form 2.
Forms 1 and 2
follow the National Curriculum Key Stage 1, and their timetable is organised
to take these requirements into account. In May, Form 2 are assessed according
to the official Standard Assessment Tasks and Tests (SATS) for seven year
olds in English and Mathematics.
Boys and Girls
in Forms 1 and 2 have many opportunities to develop their knowledge and
skills in the following subjects:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Information, Communication and Technology (ICT)
- History
- Geography
- Music
- Drama
- Art
- Design and Technology
- Religious Education
- Physical Activities, including gymnastics, swimming
and games
- French
- Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).
Pupils also develop
library skills and their ICT skills are gradually being incorporated throughout
the curriculum.
Lower School pupils
in Forms 1 and 2 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and
to participate in some of the extra curricula activities on offer.
Pupils' specific
needs are addressed and learning support is given regularly. Before and
after school care is available on a regular basis in term time.
In Forms 1 and
2 pupils benefit greatly from the special events which take place throughout
the school calendar, such as the school sports day, swimming gala, speech
day and musical play, and they are provided with many other challenges
though individual and house competitions.
Above all, pupils
in the lower school are taught to show respect and consideration for others
and are encouraged to develop good behaviour and to build their confidence
and self esteem.
The ethos of the
school is to provide a caring and stimulating environment which offers
a variety of opportunities enabling children's success to flourish and
their future goals to be achieved.
